Soccer Falls on the Road
MONTREAT, N.C. – Asbury couldn’t hold a two goal halftime lead and lost in overtime to Montreat 3-2 on Tuesday. The Eagles are now 2-3 in their last five after starting 7-1-2. This is their first overtime loss this season.
Billy Congelton knocked home his second goal of the season in the 29th minute off an assist from Trent Popp. Popp would score just seven minutes later, his team-leading 11th on the season. The Eagles (9-4-2) would take 13 shots in the game and allow Montreat (7-7) to take 20.
Montreat would tie the game in the 81st minute and then win the game in the 92nd as Leo Walker knocked home the game winner. Dylan Fouts made nine saves in goal for the Eagles on the day and Ben Hayes made four stops for Montreat.
Asbury is now 3-4 away from Wilmore and 6-0-2 at home this year. They return home for their final three games of the season, first their final conference match against Mountain State on Friday at 7 p.m. Asbury needs to win and have Berea beat or tie Cincinnati Christian to be the top seed in the KIAC Tournament. A win guarantees them a share of the KIAC title for the third straight year.
