Popp's Heroics Give Eagles OT Win
WILMORE, Ky. – Trent Popp scored in the 100th minute as the Eagles pulled out their first overtime win of the season 2-1 over Lincoln Memorial University on Tuesday. This was the fourth overtime game of the season for Asbury (2-6-3) and the first time that it didn’t end in a tie.
Jonathan Rehner got the ball up top near the box and as he fought off defenders Popp came in from the left side. Popp’s first shot was blocked and as the keeper came out Popp found the ball again on the right side of the box and put it in the back of the net for his fifth goal of the year.
Zach Welch scored the first goal of the game in the 56th minute off a pass from Ryan Moberley. Moberley turned in the box and found Welch who put it in the lower right corner for his second goal of the season. Lincoln Memorial (7-3-1) scored in 63rd minute to tie the game as Chris Nash scored after a throw-in.
LMU possessed the ball for most of the second half and overtime as they took 17 of their 23 shots during that time. The Eagles only had three shots during that same time, but scored twice. Dylan Fouts made five saves for the Eagles and the RailSplitters goal was the first he allowed in nearly 300 minutes.
The Eagles are unbeaten in their last four matches, going 2-0-2 in that span. Asbury will host Union University on Saturday at 3:30 pm.
