Header Gives Eagles First Victory
Wilmore, Ky. - Jonathan Lewis' (Rome, Ga.) goal in the 73rd minute was enough as Asbury's men picked up their first victory of the season against Hanover 1-0. Julian Botella (Flagler Beach, Fla.) sent a corner into the box and Lewis headed it into the net past the diving keeper for the game winner.
Asbury (1-3) turned the tables on the opposition on Tuesday night as they became the attacking team. In the first three matches of the season the Eagles only managed 14 shots and eight on goal, but on Tuesday the Eagles put up 23 shots and seven on goal.
"I was really pleased with our aggressiveness tonight, we were quick to everything" Coach Josh Oakley said. "It was great to score off a set piece like that tonight. Those are plays we work on for hours and hours, and it was just great to see a goal off of one."
The Eagles had two great opportunities to score in the first half, both coming off the leg of Trent Popp (Danville, Ind.). With 22 minutes left, Popp volleyed the ball, turned and shot a rocket just wide of the goal. Just moments later Popp again took a shot from just inside the 18-yard box that hit the post and on the rebound John Greer (Lexington, Ky.) missed wide.
Asbury will travel just down the road this weekend to Centre College for the Bob Allen Nissan Classic. The Eagles will battle Berry College (Ga.) on Friday September 11th at 5:00pm before taking on Wilmington College (Ohio) on Saturday at 5:00pm.
