Eagles capture KIAC soccer titles
OWENSBORO, Ky. (October 27th, 2007, KIAC) - The 2007 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Soccer Tournament came to a close on Saturday with Asbury College's Men and Women securing the first conference titles of the 2007-08 season. The women's team shut out Brescia University 4-0, while the men also defeated Brescia, 4-2.
For the women, top-seeded Asbury College used a dominant performance in the first half to win over Brescia 4-0 in Owensboro, Ky. The Eagles came out dominant in the first fifteen minutes, scoring three goals in that time span. Two of those were within the first five minutes. Brescia tried to capitalize on scoring opportunities including a penalty that just barely deflected off the goalie's hands midway through the second half. A late penalty kick sealed the 4-0 margin for Asbury.
On the men's side, both teams had good close shots on goal early in a lively first half. Third-seeded Asbury College broke the deadlock with a shot off the goalpost and a penalty kick to surge ahead 2-0, only 20 minutes into the match. Top seeded Brescia would take the next 10 minutes to erase that lead off a goal and a penalty kick to even the score at half. Asbury would open scoring in the second half with a goal in the 55th minute and the third penalty kick of the game overall in the 70th minute to finish off the 4-2 win.
The teams now both advance to the NAIA Region XII Tournament in East Ridge, Tennessee (near Chattanooga) on Friday, November 2nd. The women will play at 11:00 a.m. against King College while the men will look to take the field at 2:00 p.m. against Covenant (Ga.) College. Should Asbury advance, the women's final is at 4:30 p.m. while the men's final is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
