Stewart Tabbed as First Head Coach for Men's Lacrosse
Wilmore, KY – Athletics Director Mark Perdue has announced that Josh Stewart, a Maryland native who played and coached lacrosse at Messiah College in Grantham,Pa., will take over as Asbury’s first men’s lacrosse coach.
Perdue announced on February 1 that Asbury would add men’s and women’s lacrosse as its 15th and 16th intercollegiate athletic programs. Competition for the two teams is slated to begin in the spring of 2015.
“Bringing Josh in is an exciting time for Asbury athletics,” Perdue said. “Josh is young, but experienced, when it comes to coaching lacrosse and I believe he will be a great leader in starting our men’s lacrosse program.”
Stewart, an All-MAC Conference goalie and team captain during his playing days at Messiah, comes to Asbury after a two-year stint as the Falcons’ assistant coach. During his time as an assistant, Stewart served primarily as a defensive coordinator and goalie specialist. In addition to his on-field duties, Stewart helped recruit, plan practices, evaluate game footage and game plan for the Falcons.
“The opportunity to start a program from scratch is something that comes around once in a lifetime,” Stewart said. “Asbury provides the perfect opportunity for lacrosse players from all around the South and Midwest to get a chance to compete at a high level, while getting a great education and growing spiritually.”
Aside from coaching duties, Stewart headed up the Falcons’ four summer lacrosse camps during his two-year tenure. The summer camps, with participants ranged in age from 6 to 18, brought in roughly 150 kids each of the past two years.
“The goal for our camps at Messiah was to educate the young players in Central PA on how to play the game of lacrosse,” Stewart said. “But more importantly, we were able to show the community what a program like Messiah, and now Asbury, is all about — sharing the love of Christ through this awesome game.”
“I hope to bring that same type of atmosphere to Wilmore with me as we gear up to host some of our own instructional camps in the future,” Stewart added.
In addition to heading up the lacrosse program, Stewart will also serve as the Interim Sports Information Director for the Eagles. Stewart takes over a position held by Asbury grad T.J. Budd '08. Budd served as the Sports Information Director for the past six years before moving onto a job with Southern Wesleyan University in Central, S.C.
