Brooks Shoots One Over On Day One
SALEM, Ore. – Steven Brooks fired a one-over 73 on day one at the NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship at Creekside Golf Club. He is in an eight-way tie for 25th. Oklahoma City’s Anthony Marchesani paces the 154-man field with a four-under 68.
Brooks, making the school’s first appearance at the event since golf was restored for the 2010-11 season, bogeyed his first hole, the par-4 10th before rebounding for four straight pars. He birdied the par-4 15th before finishing the back nine with a bogey on 18.
After bogeys on two of his first four holes on the front nine, Brooks birdied number 5 and closed the round with his third birdie of the round on number 9. Overall he shot even par on the eight par-4s, with three birdies and three bogeys. He made par on all five par-3s and shot one-over on the par-5s.
Oklahoma City University leads the team competition after posting an eight-under 280 on day one. Three of their top four finished under par for the round. Grand View University shot an even-par 288 and sits in second. KIAC Champion Point Park is 19th of 28 teams after shooting a 309.
Brooks will tee-off of number one on Wednesday at 11:30 eastern time. Live updates are being provided by the NAIA and you can follow along with his second round here. After the third round the field will be cut to the top 17 teams and 40 individuals with the final round to be played on Friday.
