Brooks Wins KIAC, Team Takes 3rd
RICHMOND, Ky. – Steven Brooks won the 2013 KIAC men’s golf tournament by four strokes and will compete in the NAIA National Tournament in Salem, Oregon. Brooks shot a two-over 218 (74-71-73) for the tournament. Asbury finished 3rd out of seven teams.
Brooks trailed by two after the first 18 holes to Chris Bowen from Point Park. Bowen shot an even round 72 for the round but by the end of the first day Brooks had taken the lead with an even-par 108 through 27 holes. He wrapped up the second round on Tuesday with the only sub-par round of the tournament from the 34-man field. Brooks distanced himself from the field with an eagle from 128-yards with five holes left to play.
Asbury was in second on the team leaderboard after round one, posting a 316 but Brescia shot second and third round lows to leap over the Eagles. Asbury finished with a 937 (316-309-312) while Brescia shot a 919 (316-301-302). Point Park had a commanding 22-shot lead after the first round and finished 16 strokes ahead of Brescia with a 903 (294-302-307).
Brooks will join Point Park at the NAIA National Tournament in Salem, Oregon at Creekside Golf Club and begins on May 14. The 72-hole tournament will be cut after Thursday’s round (54 holes). Brooks is the first Eagle to qualify for the national tournament since golf was reinstated in the 2010-11 year.
