Gibbons Ties for First as Eagles Claim Title
BEREA, Ky. – Daniel Gibbons just missed out on claiming his first collegiate win, falling in a two-hole playoff to Indiana East’s Joey Smart. Asbury took the team championship after a 303 on Saturday to finish with a two day total of 632, 15 shots better than Indiana East.
Gibbons held the 18-hole lead after firing a one-over 73 on Friday and followed it up with a two-under 70 on Saturday to post a one-under 143 for the tournament. IUE’s Smart shot a 74 on Friday, they were the only two golfers in the 70’s through 18, and shot a 69 on Saturday to force the two-hole playoff.
The Eagles entered the second day three strokes behind IUE and completely turned around the tournament with a 303 on Saturday. Zack Burr and Zach Lemons improved by eight and 13 strokes respectively on the second day. Burr finished 3rd with a 158 while Lemons posted a 165 and took 5th. The fourth member of the team turned in a 166 to place right behind Lemons in 7th place.
Asbury will host their Spring Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, April 9-10 at Connemara Golf Club in Nicholasville.
