Diehl, Falkenberg, and Vonderheide Qualify for Nationals at KIACs
MIDWAY, Ky. - Saturday's KIAC Conference meet provided three runners from the Asbury cross country teams a chance to compete at the NAIA Cross Country National Meet. Taylor Diehl, Katy Falkenberg, and Justine Vonderheide all punched their tickets for the trip to Lawrence, Kan., for the 2013 Cross Country Championship.
As a team, the Asbury women faced a similar fate as the one from the 2012 KIAC Conference meet. Brescia bested the Eagles by a slim margin again this year as they placed runners in second, third, and fifth to take the team crown by nine points over the Eagles, 50-41.
Falkenberg and Vonderheide paced the Eagles again as they finished 1-2 for their team and placed in fourth and eighth, respectively. Vonderheide turned in the meet's last sub 21 minute time at 20:51-- 19 seconds behind Falkenberg.
The Eagles' women runners placed their top-six in the first 25 finishers with Devon Zweifel and Kim Miller missing out on bids to the NAIA meet by six and seven seconds, respectively.
On the men's side the Eagles garnered third-place team honors. Taylor Diehl turned his NAIA-qualifying finish of ninth-place overall for the leader of the Asbury pack of runners. His time was a full 1:45 seconds behind the impressive finish from Berea's Jeremy Johnson, who took the individual crown.
Berea also took four of the top-five spots for the team win.
The Eagles runners that qualified for the NAIA National Meet will have to wait until November 23rd for their next race which will be held in Lawrence, Kan.
