DANVILLE, Ky. - Saturday turned out to be the year’s coolest day and also the best day one could hope for as Asbury’s cross country team ran their second meet of the year. The cool weather coupled with the early morning start time made for pristine conditions for a running a tough course at the Centre College Invitational.
The weather seemed to have all the runners in high spirits as times showed improvements across the board.
For the women the lead runner was junior Justin Vonderheide with a time of 19:49. The sub-20-minute time was the first of the season for any women’s runner.
Shortly behind her was freshman Katy Falkenburg—who won the Chik-fil-A invitational two weekends ago— with a time of 20:04. Other runners that collected points for the team were Christina Williams, Devon Zweifel, Kim Miller, Rachel Terry and Savannah Riley.
The women finished in third place overall as a team.
Many of the men not only had a new course to run in this early season but also a new distance. The freshman and transfers ran their first 8k—as opposed to the 5k that the runners are generally used to from high school and the Chik-fil-a meet.
The men placed in fourth place overall and each of them finished their runs successfully.
Junior Taylor Diehl came in first for the men for the second time this season with a time of 28:50, right in front of senior Isaac Harrison with a time of 30:14. Caleb Woodard, David Smith, Mason Lambert, Josh Lusk, and Austin Reid also earned points toward the team score
The cross country team will run their next meet this Saturday 9/21 at Berea College.
