With AsburyEagles.com writer Matthew Hunter
BEREA, Ky. - Asbury University’s starters led the way throughout the game totaling 71 of the team’s 80 points on Saturday afternoon. Despite getting just nine points off the bench, Asbury (3-1) was lead by a three-man tandem of seniors Cam Richardson (23 pts), Lee’Vaughn Morris (15 pts), and CJ Penny (15 pts) who accumulated 53 points, 21 rebounds, nine assists, and six steals.
Morris again flirted with a triple-double with his 15 point, nine rebound, and six assist performance.
To go along with the monster offensive performance, Asbury’s defense proved to be tough as well, holding Virginia Intermont 74 points on .432 percent shooting and just .200 from downtown. The Eagles were relentless in the passing lanes and caused havoc, forcing the Cobras into 18 turnovers.
The Eagles largest deficit came just thirty seconds into the matchup when they were down three. From then on, the Eagles took and remained in control. At one time, the Eagles led by fifteen, but the Cobras kept hanging around.
Though the Eagles seemed in control of the game for the duration—building leads of 15 and 11 points at points in the half—they took just a one point lead into intermission. In the second half, Asbury outscored Virginia Intermont 48-43 to take home the 80-74 victory.
JD Tucker led Virginia Intermont with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while playing all 40 minutes.
The Eagles return home after 21 days without a home game to face Virginia University of Lynchburg on November 23rd. The game will be part of a double header that features both the men and the women here in the Luce Center.
