Red Wolves Spoil Senior Night
WILMORE, Ky. – Asbury men’s basketball couldn’t hold a 41-39 halftime lead on senior night, falling to Indiana East 86-82 on Tuesday night. The game was back and forth all night long with seven ties and 10 lead changes.
The Eagles (18-12, 9-6 KIAC) twice tied the game late but were never able to take the lead away from the Red Wolves (20-10, 10-5 KIAC). Asbury held the lead for the final 10 minutes of the first half and even pushed the margin out to nine on several occasions. The Red Wolves took the lead back three minutes into the second half and never let the Eagles take it back.
Adam Delph led four players in double figures for the Eagles, scoring a team-high 24 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Delph scored 18 of his points in the second half. He also grabbed nine rebounds Tyler Fangman led all scorers with 26 points for IUE.
Austin Flannery and Dakotah Euton provided a spark off the bench as they made way for seniors DeQuann Gordon and Shawn Brauner in the starting lineup. Brauner scored 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting and also handed out a team-high four assists. Flannery scored 12 points, 10 of which came in the first half. Euton just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. CJ Penny added 14 points and nine rebounds for the Eagles.
The Eagles dominated on the glass, 50-39, and shot 42-percent to 41-percent for IUE, but the real story came in the turnover department. The Eagles entered the game averaging only 13 turnover per game, but gave the ball up 19 times which led to 25 points for the Red Wolves. Indiana East was also able to get in the lane at east, scoring 36 points in the paint to 28 for the Eagles.
The loss puts Asbury in a tie with Cincinnati Christian for third in the KIAC with both teams at 9-6 in league play. Asbury holds the tiebreaker over CCU after beating the Golden Eagles twice this season. Asbury will host Berea – who beat Asbury in both meetings – on Saturday at 7 pm. Berea wrapped up the season with a 7-8 conference record and are the six seed.
