Defense Stifles Brescia as Men Win 4th Straight

Box Score | Season Stats

Mitch McLeishWILMORE, Ky. – Asbury men held their second straight opponent under 40 points as they won their fourth straight, 61-38 over Brescia on Tuesday night.  The Eagles are holding opponents to 49 points per game during their current win streak.  Asbury improves to 6-3 in the KIAC, third place just one loss behind Berea for second.

The Eagles (15-9, 6-3 KIAC) overcame a slow first half where they scored just 20 points and trailed 23-20.  The second half was a much different story as the Eagles quickly tied the game at 25 and proceeded to go on a 16-3 run over the next four minutes.  Brescia (7-16, 2-8 KIAC) scored just 15 points in the second half.

Adam Delph led the way, scoring a game-high 18 points and also had five rebounds and four steals.  Delph was 7-of-12 from the floor.  The Eagles overcame a 7-of-26 performance in the first half to shoot 55-percent in the second (16-of-29).

Asbury turned an eight point lead with 7:37 left into a 25-point lead with a 17-0 run that ended when Myron Christian scored with 35-seconds left.  Asbury forced five turnovers during that span and pressured the Bearcats into 21 turnovers in the game.  The Eagles gave it up an uncharacteristic 14 times.

Austin Flannery and Mitch McLeish each scored 11 points.  McLeish hit three three-pointers off the bench and Flannery was 4-of-8 from the floor.  Lee’Vaughn Morris and Justin Jones each grabbed six rebounds as the Eagles outmuscled Brescia on the boards 39-32.  Jones added four blocks, surpassing the 200 mark with 202 in his career.  He is only the second player to eclipse 200 blocks in a career and needs six more to become the all-time leader.

Asbury will travel to Brescia on February 9.  The Eagles are currently in third place in the KIAC at 6-3 with Berea just a half-game ahead at 6-2.  IU Southeast is leading the conference at 8-0.

The Eagles will hit the road for four straight, first travelling to Berea on Tuesday February 5.
