Eagles Fall in Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va. – A poor shooting night was enough to keep the Eagles out of the win column for the third straight game, falling 61-54 to the Knights from Southern Virginia in the Knights New Year Classic.  SVU has won 15 straight at home.

Asbury (6-9) shot only 34.5% from the floor in the game and made only seven field goals in the second half.  The game was tied at 34-34 at halftime but the Eagles would score only 20 points in the second half.

The Knights (7-6) were actually worse from the field, connecting on only 32.7% of their shots.  The difference came at the foul line, where the Knights visited 26 times making 21 while Asbury was only five-of-nine.

Austin Flannery led the Eagles with a game-high 19 points and also pulled down a team-best seven rebounds.  Flannery hit on six-of-12 shots and made three from beyond the three-point arc.  He also made all four free throws.  Marquel Johnson came off the bench to score a career-high 14 points, his second game in double figures after missing the first semester of the season after transferring back to Asbury.

The Eagles will finish off their stay in Buena Vista with a noon game against Virginia College of Lynchburg today.
