Mountaineers Outlast Eagles
Berea, KY---Forty-five minutes were too much for the Eagles as Asbury fell to Berea 85-77 in overtime at the Seabury Center in Berea, Kentucky Tuesday night. Asbury held a 35-34 lead at halftime but the Mountaineers came back in the second half 37-36 before a 14-6 run in overtime.
Asbury (16-11, 4-6 KIAC) went cold in the extra session, hitting only 2-of-9 shots and missing all five 3-point attempts. The Mountaineers did most of their damage from the free throw line hitting 6-of-10, and making 4-of-8 from the floor in overtime. The loss means Berea, not Asbury, will be the third seed in next week's KIAC Tournament at Alice Lloyd and Asbury will meet the host Eagles in the 4-5 game next Thursday February 26th at 12pm. They would meet the #1 seed Indiana Southeast if they win on Friday at 12pm. Berea will meet St. Louis Pharmacy on Thursday at 2pm, with IU East awaiting the winner Friday at 2pm.
Sophomore Phillip Morrison led the way on Tuesday, scoring 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting, hitting three 3's and all five from the charity stripe. Senior Michael Spann added 14 but shot only 4-of-11 from the free throw line. Sophomore Jordan Hammonds added 12 despite shooting 6-of-16 and missing all six from beyond the arc. Junior Brian Johnson had 11 points.
Hammonds added 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season, even though Asbury was outrebounded 55-36. Morrison had four assists to lead the team. The Eagles struggled shooting from all over the floor, 40% from the floor, 32% from three, and only 56% from the free throw line.
Asbury will finish the regular season at home on Thursday February 19th at 8pm when Cincinnati Christian University comes to town. Senior Day festivities will be held prior to the game.
