Men Open Tourney With Thriller
Pippa Passes, KY---Michael Spann hit a three-pointer with 1.6 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 73, and Jordan Hammonds hit another with 1.1 left in overtime to give Asbury a dramatic 84-81 win over Alice Lloyd in the first round of the KIAC Tournament.
Spann led the way with a season-high 32 points, including the first eight in overtime and 11 straight beginning with the game tying three. Spann also led the team with four assists. Brian Johnson and Jordan Hammonds each had 12 points, and Johnson had a game-high 15 rebounds including seven offensive. TJ Chinn was also in double figures with 11 off the bench.
Both teams struggled in the first half with Asbury shooting only 31% from the floor and Alice Lloyd only 39%. Alice Lloyd had a slim 28-27 lead at the half.
Asbury stayed tough on the boards, battling the bigger Alice Lloyd post players all game long. Asbury lost the battle 43-46 but pulled down 15 offensive rebounds that help string together long possessions in the overtime period.
