Eagles Fly Past Spalding in Overtime
Louisville, KY--- The Asbury College men's basketball team exacted revenge on Spalding University on Thursday night, beating the Golden Eagles 90-78 in overtime at Derek Smith Gym. Asbury lost to Spalding at home back in December.
Asbury (12-5) was led by their own big three, senior Michael Spann, and sophomores Phillip Morrison and Jordan Hammonds who scored 81 of the team's 90 points. This was Hammonds' first game of the season after sitting out all of last semester and serving an NAIA two game suspension this semester.
Hammonds didn't waste any time taking charge, scoring 30 points in his debut on 10 of 20 shooting and 5 of 12 from the three point line. He was also a perfect 5 for 5 from the free throw line. Spann and Morrison, the leading scorers on the team, weren't far behind scoring 26 and 25 respectively. Spann knocked down two threes and was 6 of 8 from the charity stripe while Morrison knocked down three threes and was 11 of 16 from the floor.
The Eagles shot 55% for the game including a perfect 5 for 5 in overtime. Spalding shot 48% for the game but was only 2 for 5 in the extra session. Spalding out rebounded Asbury 41-25, but they turned it over 17 while Asbury only turned it over seven times.
Asbury will open conference play on the road Saturday January 17th at Indiana Southeast at 7:30pm. Live stats will be available for the game, you can access that page by clicking here.
