Men's Basketball falls to Alice Lloyd, 80-79
Wilmore, KY - Hot shooting in the second half by an opponent doomed Asbury again as Alice Lloyd would shoot 62.5% (20-32) from the field in the second frame to send the Eagles to a conference-opening loss, 80-79.
Asbury was led by Ben Spann with 25 points and 13 rebounds as well as 21 from Derek Bland and 20 by Brandon Fentress. The trio represented all but 13 of Asbury's points as the Eagles would falter from the line as well in the second half, going just 2-of-9 from the stripe.
Derek Bland would tie the game at 74 with 0:59 left after nailing his fifth three-pointer of the game. Alice Lloyd answered with a Rodney Mitchell field goal setting up a Brandon Fentress charge, his fifth foul, to give Alice Lloyd a 77-74 lead after making one of two foul shots. Bland would miss a three point attempt and the other Eagles would hold on for the win at the line, but not after a desperation three by Bland cut the lead to 80-79 and a subsequent steal and 75-foot heave by Michael Spann careened off the back rim.
The loss drops Asbury to 11-7 on the season, 0-1 in conference play. The Eagles will travel to Louisville to face Spalding University on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. before returning home to face St. Louis Pharmacy at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Saturday's game can be heard on WACW , Asbury's home on the internet.
