KIAC Announces Baseball Awards, Messner Named 1st team
NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Asbury senior Casey Messner was named KIAC All-Conference 1st Team by league coaches on Thursday. Messner was the lone representative for the Eagles and makes his second appearance on the first team after being second team the last two years. Senior pitcher Isaiah Bell and freshman Zach Settle were named second team selections.
Messner leads the team with a .368 batting average and a .460 on-base percentage heading into play on Friday. His 45 runs scored are second in the KIAC. Messner scored 23 runs in 19 conference games to lead all KIAC players and batted .429, fourth in the league. He is the school’s leader in runs with 178 and is tied for best on-base percentage at .447.
Bell has been the team’s number one starter for the last two years and despite a 2-10 record on the year has posted a 4.96 ERA and a 3.82 mark in KIAC games. The senior has struck out a team-best 54 on the season in 61.2 innings. Settle, has a 4-3 record in his first campaign for the Eagles and leads the team with a 4.83 ERA. In conference games Settle has a 3.46 ERA. He has struck out 46 in 59.2 innings on the season.
Brandon Smith and Jared Hahn have provided stability in the middle of the Eagles’ infield all season. Smith, already the school leader in assists and double plays, has been part of 36 double plays this season. He leads the KIAC with 139 assists on the season. Hahn took over at second early in the year and has made only five errors all season. He ranks 5th in the KIAC in assists with 102 and has been part of 26 double plays.
