Eagles Fall Despite Cook's Slam
WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Asbury baseball’s comeback bid was overturned by Cumberlands (Ky.) as the Patriots rebounded to win 6-5 on Tuesday afternoon. Andrew Cook hit a grand slam in the eighth to give the Eagles a 5-3 lead.
Asbury (19-34) took an early 1-0 lead in the first, but wasted a chance to score more by leaving the bases loaded. Casey Messner led off with a single to left and after a groundout and wild pitch, he scored on a single by Landon Skaggs. Skaggs finished with three hits including two doubles and leads the team with 13 doubles on the season.
Cumberlands (27-17) took the lead with a pair of runs in the second and another in the third off of Logan Howard. Four of the six hits against Howard came in the second as the Patriots put four back-to-back to score both runs. In the third an error, one of six on the day, led to the third run. Howard pitched five innings and allowed just two earned runs. He walked two and struck out three.
The Eagles put a runner on base in every single inning of the game, but wouldn’t score again until the eighth. Skaggs led it off with a double to left. Simeon Bell reached on an error with one out and with two outs Logan Crum worked a walk. Andrew Cook greeted reliever Claduio Valencia rudely with his first home run of the season, a grand slam to left to give the Eagles a 6-3 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning Zach Settle ran into trouble after a leadoff walk. After a single and a sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, Jake Goodman delivered a single up the middle that brought both runners in. Micah Pace was summoned from the bullpen and promptly struck out the first batter he faced but a pinch-hit single by Chris Appelman brought in the winning run.
The Eagles put the go-ahead run on base in the ninth as Brandon Ray was plunked with one out and Mitch Watson worked a two-out walk but Logan Crum popped out to end the game. Overall the Eagles left 11 men on base.
Asbury is scheduled to play at Campbellsville on Wednesday at 5 pm in a single nine inning game. Senior day is scheduled for Friday at home against Kentucky State at 3 pm. Senior day activities will take place following the conclusion of the game.
