Olszowy, Warford Named Academic All-District
WILMORE, Ky. – Seniors Danny Olszowy and Mary Ann Warford were selected to the Capital One Academic All-District Teams in baseball and softball respectively. They become the first Asbury selections in any sport.
The teams are selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Both the baseball and softball teams are separated into eight districts across the country with each district having four divisions: NCAA I, NCAA II, NCAA III and the College division which encompasses NAIA schools with JUCOs and Canadian schools.
The award honors both an outstanding athletic achievement as well as maintaining excellent work in the classroom. To be eligible student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and hold a 3.3 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale.
Olszowy, a senior left fielder from Lexington, Ky. (Bryan Station HS) will graduate on Saturday (May 5) with a degree in Exercise Science. He will leave the baseball program with many school records including career hits, runs, RBI, stolen bases, doubles and triples. He also holds the school mark for single season hits (61 – 2012) and runs (52 – 2011).
Olszowy is currently leading the team with a .389 average with 17 2B, 6 3B, 3 HR, 38 RBI and 21 stolen bases. He was also named Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year. Asbury baseball is one win away from advancing to the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in school history and will play again on Friday (May 4) at 2 pm.
Warford will also graduate on Saturday with a degree in Elementary Eduacation. The center fielder has been a constant on the field for the Eagles, helping to revitalize the program after softball was cancelled following the 2002 season. It was brought back for the 2009 season, and Warford has been there every step of the way.
Warford currently leads the team and ranks 11th in the NAIA with a .476 batting average. She has also stolen 34 bases, a school record, which also ranks 11th in the NAIA. Warford will leave the school as the all-time leader in stolen bases and hits and has set the school mark for hits in a single season this year. The softball team returns to action as the #2 seed in the KIAC Tournament set to begin Friday. The Eagles will play the winner of #3 Brescia and #6 Alice Lloyd at 3:45 pm.
First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month. For baseball and softball, only First Team All-District teams were selected, so each member listed above continues on to the national ballot.
The Capital One Division II and III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2011-12 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams program.
