Eagles Split with Union
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Asbury scored early and often but couldn’t hold a lead in game one as they split a pair at Union College on Tuesday. The Eagles blew an early 4-0 lead in an 8-4 loss in game won before scoring late to win 7-6 in eight innings in game two.
Asbury (7-4-2) out-hit Union in the first game 7-5 as Danny Olszowy collected a pair of doubles. Tyler Weaver also picked up a double as six different Eagles collected hits.
The Eagles picked up eight hits in game two as Olszowy pounded out two more hits including another double and his second home run of the season. Matt Ciolek had three hits in the second game and hit his second home run of the season. Olszowy finished with four RBIs on the day and Ciolek finished with two.
Asbury scored first in both games, posting two runs in the top of the first in game one and three in the first inning of game two. Asbury scored two more in the third inning of game one as Union added a single run in the third, fourth and sixth innings.
The Bulldogs exploded for five runs in the fifth, knocking Eagles’ starter Greg Bowling out of the game. Bowling didn’t allow a hit but walked five and hit two batters in four innings of work. Asbury pitchers walked six and hit three batters. Josh Cummins picked up the loss (1-1) in relief.
In game two Asbury scored the first four runs before the Bulldogs scored four in the bottom of the second. The Eagles came back with one in the fifth as Evan Thomsen singled in Casey Messner. Union would tie the score at 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth as a two-out single allowed an unearned run to score.
In the eighth inning Asbury would be the ones to take advantage of an error. Cody Christopher reached on a throwing error, allowing Anthony Palmer to score from second. Gardner Adams pitched two innings in relief to get the win (3-1). Adams allowed only one hit and one walk while striking out four.
Asbury is scheduled to play one nine-inning game at Georgetown College on Wednesday at 5:00 pm. They will host Huntington University on Saturday for a double-header set to start at 12:00 pm.
