Patriots Overpower Eagles
Wilmore, Ky. – Asbury couldn’t keep pace with the firepower of University of the Cumberlands on Tuesday, falling 13-7. Cumberlands scored in all but one of the innings on the day, as they lit up every pitcher Asbury threw.
Asbury (16-20) held an early lead as Matt Ciolek belted his fifth home run of the season in the first inning. Ciolek’s three run bomb gave Asbury their only lead of the game at 3-2. The Patriots answered with three of their own in the top of the second. The Eagles tied it at 5-5 in the third, but then the bats went quiet as reliever Bruce Jones shut down the comeback effort.
Cumberlands (18-21) hit four homers in the game, a season high allowed by Eagles’ pitching. Greg Bowling also hit a home run for Asbury, his third of the season. Asbury used four pitchers to get through the seven inning game, each giving up at least two runs. Cody Christopher (1-3) got the loss while Bruce Jones (1-0) picked up the loss.
The Eagles will jump back into KIAC action on Friday and Saturday as they host Berea College for a pair of doubleheaders. Friday’s action starts at 1:00 pm while Saturday gets going at 12:00 pm.
