Asbury Blasts Bears

Game One | Game Two

Wilmore, Ky. – Josh Thigpen and Jon Wes Adams picked up their first wins of the season as the Eagles swept a double-header from Pikeville 13-3 and 14-2.

Asbury (6-7) jumped on Pikeville (2-10) early in both games.  The Eagles quickly took back a 1-0 deficit in game one in the bottom of the first with two runs as Matt Ciolek doubled in two.  The Eagles would pile on seven more in the second as Pikeville committed three errors in the inning.  Evan Thomsen came up with the big hit in the inning with a bases loaded triple.  Thomsen, Mark Deetsch, and Casey Messner would each add two hits.  Asbury only had eight hits in the game, but two hit batters, four walks, and four errors gave Asbury plenty of base runners.  Asbury would hit three home runs in the game, Danny Olszowy, Mark Deetsch, and Casey Messner each blasted their first of the season.  Deetsch and Messner’s shots came in the bottom of the fifth that wound up ending the game.

Thigpen struck out seven as he gave up a run in the first and two more in the fifth, he was pulled with two outs in the fifth.  Drew Freeman came on in relief and got the only batter he faced to fly out.

The second game started out even better for Asbury as they scored six runs in the first and four more in the second to take a commanding 10-0 lead.  The Eagles pieced together five hits in each of the first two innings.  Ciolek had a single and a double in the two innings and drove home three runs.  Thomsen brought two in the second inning with a single.  Asbury would add one more in the third and three in the fourth.  Danny Olszowy, Matt Ciolek, and Gardner Adams each collected two hits and Ciolek, Mark Deetsch, Tyler Weaver, and Evan Thomsen each drove in at least two runs.

Jon Wes Adams got his first start of the season on the mound and cruised to the win.  Adams threw four innings of five hit baseball and struck out six without walking a batter.  The only run he allowed came in the fourth.  Josh Cummins pitched the fifth inning to finish off the game.

Asbury will head down to Lambuth University on Friday for a three-game weekend series.  They will play one nine-inning game on Friday starting at 2:00 pm with a double-header slated for Saturday starting at 12:00 pm.
