Bowling KIAC Pitcher of the Year, Seven Others Honored

Berea, Ky. - The KIAC presented their awards for baseball prior to the second game of the conference tournament on Thursday evening.  Asbury had eight different players honored in one way or another. 

Sophomore Pitcher/Shortstop Greg Bowling (Ashland, Ky.) was named Pitcher of the Year after finishing the regular season with a 3-2 record and a 1.97 ERA.  Bowling surrendered only 31 hits in 50 1/3 innings on the season.  He also struck out 32 while walking only 18.  Opponents hit only .179 against him.  Bowling was also named to the All-KIAC First Team as well as a gold glove winner at shortstop.

Sophomore Greg Bowling was named KIAC Pitcher of the Year after posting a 3-2 record and a 1.97 ERA in 50 1/3 innings on the season.

Junior Catcher Zach Monroe (Lexington, Ky.) was named All-KIAC First Team and finished second in the Player of the Year race by one point.  Monroe broke his school season record for home runs with 14 this year after hitting seven in his first season at Asbury last year.  His 21 homers are the most in a career at Asbury.  Monroe also led the team with 35 RBI and hit .284 with a team best .453 OBP. 

Asbury had five other players named to the All-KIAC Second Team as Junior Blake Englehardt (1B), Sophomore Travis Martin (Utility), Freshmen Danny Olszowy (OF), Sophomore Mark Deetsch (P), and Sophomore Josh Thigpen (P) were honored.  Olszowy (Lexington, Ky.) led the team with a .349 batting average and 15 stolen bases in 16 chances.  He also led the team with four triples and was second in doubles with seven.  Englehardt (Largo, Fla.) was second in batting average at .348 and led the team with 10 doubles.  He was second with 28 RBI and tied for second with two home runs.  Travis Martin (Campbellsburg, Ky.) split time at first base and third base this season and hit .296.  Mark Deetsch (Louisville, Ky.) went 3-1 on the season with a 4.57 ERA in 43 1/3 innings.  He struck out 40 and only walked 12.  Thigpen (Maple, N.C.) tied for the staff lead in wins as he went 5-2.  He had a 4.54 ERA in 41 2/3 innings while striking out a team-high 41.

Deetsch was also named as a gold glove second basemen and Sophomore Gardner Adams (Lexington, Ky.) was named as a gold glove third basemen. 

The KIAC Tournament continues tonight through Saturday in Berea, Kentucky.
