Joe Castillo to Welcome Alumni to Reunion

Reunion at Asbury University — which will take place this year June 19-22 — is more than an opportunity to reconnect with classmates and visit the locations on campus that hold cherished memories. It’s also a chance to be encouraged and equipped for present-day situations, as well.

With that in mind, Asbury will host “America’s Got Talent” finalist Joe Castillo for a Welcome Back Celebration at 7 p.m. on June 20 in Hughes Auditorium. All alumni and guests are invited to attend the free program.

Asbury University and Joe Castillo
Sand Artist Joe Castillo performed at Asbury University in December 2012. He will return at Reunion on June 20.

Castillo is no stranger to Wilmore; in addition to completing two degrees at Asbury Theological Seminary, he presented a Christmas-themed program at Asbury University in 2012. His worldwide popularity, stoked by performances on “America’s Got Talent” in the summer of 2012, is grounded in deep experience with the visual arts and an authentic, compelling faith.

“We are so excited to welcome Mr. Castillo back to Asbury to share his style of storytelling with us,” said Lisa Harper ’90, director of Alumni Relations. “This program will entertain the whole family — one of the many highlights of the weekend — and communicate familiar Bible stories and images in a unique way.”

The Welcome Back Celebration is just one of many events during Snapshots: Reunion 2014 intentionally designed to feed the soul and nurture long friendships. A complete schedule for the weekend is available at Asbury.edu/reunion. Here are a few highlights:

  • Free performances of Asbury’s Kennedy Center-nominated production of “The Beams are Creaking,” which tells of the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer
  • Worship together in Hughes Auditorium on Friday, Saturday and Sunday
  • Class dessert gatherings and luncheons
  • Picnics and banquets
  • Kids’ programming for ages birth through high school

A special concert featuring alumni who participated in any band ensembles as students, led by Dr. Lynn Cooper, Dr. Glen Flanigan and Prof. James Curnow
