Parting the clouds: Asbury welcomes Illuminated

WILMORE, KY—The Illuminated class along with 68 new and 13 returning members of the Awakened (Class of 2013), Zealous (Class of 2012), and Fearless (Class of 2011) classes brightened up a cloud-covered day at Asbury University on Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010.
The 353 new students, including 285 first-time freshmen, hail from 39 states and 13 countries, including Argentina, Bolivia, China, Cuba, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Kenya, Papa New Guinea, Philippines, Spain, South Africa, and Uruguay. More than 47 percent are from Kentucky.
The Illuminated class was named by class sponsors seniors Jenelle McClean and Ryan Stoltzfus and will be advised by Jeanette and Roger Davis. These four will serve alongside the new class all four years as mentors and guides. McClean and Stoltzfus selected 2 Corinthians 4:6 (NIV) as the class verse: “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.”
This class is academically strong with an average GPA of 3.65, which is higher than last year. They had an average ACT of 24 and SAT of 1133. More than 61 percent were in the top 25 percent of their graduating classes. As a result more than 41 percent received academic scholarships. Other scholarship recipients included 28 music, six theatre, and 107 athletics students. The incoming class received $4.29 million in total gift aid.
Of the new class, 68.1 percent graduated from public schools, another 23 percent from private high schools and 8.9 percent were homeschooled.
The top five majors selected by incoming students are media communication, elementary education, equine management, business management and biology.
Classes for the 2010-11 academic year begin Monday, Aug. 23.
