Theatre student stars in Danville play
WILMORE, KY—Asbury College senior Luke Baldridge has been cast in the lead role of Pioneer Playhouse’s production of “Death by Darkness” by Elizabeth Orndorff. Baldridge will play Jack Andrews, alongside John Nyrere Frazier, an actor from Chicago who is reprising the starring role of Stephen Bishop. Baldridge received Best Supporting Actor of 2008 in the Theatre and Cinema Performance program. Frazier won “Best Actor” at the 2007 International Mystery Writers Festival.
“Death by Darkness” was awarded Best Play at the 2007 International Mystery Writers Festival, where Ms. Orndorff also took honors as Best New Playwright. The play also won the 2008 Southern Playwrights Competition.
Set deep inside Kentucky’s Mammoth Cave in 1842, “Death by Darkness” follows a small party of tourists led by slave-guide Stephen Bishop, a true figure from history. “You will be changed by this cave,” Bishop warns the group of strangers at the start of the expedition, and before the night is out, two are dead, one is unmasked as an imposter, and secrets are buried deep within the cave itself.
“Death by Darkness” will run July 8-19 (Tuesdays through Saturdays). Dinner is served at 7:30 p.m.; the show begins promptly at 8:30 p.m. Performances are outdoors, under the stars. In case of rain, plays will be held in the fully renovated and air-conditioned indoor theatre.
A Question and Answer session with the playwright will follow performances on Thursdays and Fridays (July 10, 11, 17, 18).
