Biographical Information

Nathan Miller is a performer, conductor, scholar, and educator. He serves as Assistant Professor of Musicology and Director of the University Orchestra and Chamber Music programs. He has taught previously at Transylvania University and the University of Kentucky. In addition to his responsibilities at Asbury University, Nathan also directs the Salvation Army Student Fellowship Brass Band and maintains an active performance schedule. He plays alto (tenor) horn with High Bridge Brass, America’s premier conical ensemble, and is the solo hornist for the Lexington Brass Band and Saxton’s Cornet Band and has regularly been featured as a soloist with both ensembles. He travels throughout the country as guest soloist, conductor, and clinician, and is an International Artist for Willson Band Instruments.

His earliest music education was in The Salvation Army, where he began playing the alto horn at eight years old. He continues to worship and serve at the Salvation Army and play in his local corps (church) brass band. When he was sixteen, he began playing solo horn in the St. Louis Brass Band. In addition to the alto horn, Nathan began playing the French horn as a senior in High School. He later received his masters in horn performance from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati after completing a B.A. in music from Asbury University. Nathan credits the transformational education he received as a student at Asbury for laying the groundwork for future professional success and also developing in him a curious mind to seek God as he is revealed in his word and in the world. Nathan’s primary horn teachers include Randy Gardner, Tom Sherwood, Duane Dugger, Bill Hammond, and Dave Shelton. He was mentored and tutored in conducting and leadership by Ron Holz and James Curnow.

Nathan completed his Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Kentucky. His research interests include the intersection of music and identity, the American brass band movement, 19th-century hymnody, and the music of The Salvation Army.

Nathan lives in Wilmore with his wife, Ellen, and their two young daughters, Eliza and Audie.
