Alum Writes TV Script, Works Behind Scenes

For a young writer in Los Angeles, Asbury University alum Greg Weidman ’06 has already achieved a significant milestone: writing the script for a popular network television show. However, even a normal, routine workday is full of interesting things when your job is other people’s entertainment.

Weidman — who majored in Media Communications at Asbury — works as a writers’ assistant for the CBS show “NCIS: LA,” an hour-long weekly drama about a team of undercover agents in the Navy Criminal Investigative Service.

“I handle all the research for the show,” Weidman said. “I've researched topics ranging from military protocol to how electromagnetic pulses work, how to break out of jail and the best way to crack a safe. I also take notes whenever there is a story meeting, proofread scripts, and aid in the publication of each draft.”

However, a few months ago the producers of the show accepted his pitch for a script, and the finished episode aired January 10.

Filming took place in early December, and as the writer for the episode, Weidman was on hand for any questions about the story or dialog throughout the process.

“I got to interact with the cast quite a bit,” he said. “I was on set during the entire shoot, which was a really great and educational experience. They're all such cool people to work with, so it makes for a fun work environment. I consider myself very privileged to have had the opportunity to write for them.”

Asbury’s School of Communication Arts offers Communication, Journalism, Media Communication and Theatre and Cinema Performance majors the opportunity to learn practical, industry-specific skills such as screenwriting.
