WILMORE, KY—Asbury University sophomore Zach Whelchel is living a dream this summer. The media communications student from Wilmore, Ky., just recently launched his newest project, the Ichthus Festival iPhone application. Download the free app for your iPhone.

The Ichthus Festival app is the first of its kind for a Christian music festival says Whelchel who developed the app this summer at the request of Mark Vermilion, Ichthus CEO. The app will keep festival-goers up-to-speed with the stage lineup, allow them to make a personalized schedule for the festival, upload photos, and check the often unpredictable weather at the festival grounds. The Ichthus Festival, June 16-19 in Wilmore, is the oldest and longest running Christian music festival in the nation.

When Vermilion and Whelchel met for the first time in May, Whelchel thought the app would be ready for the 2011 festival. However, in an attempt to stay on the cutting edge, Ichthus wanted to launch the app for festival-goers this year. "As a result of his determination and many long hours put in by the interns and staff at Ichthus we are now the only Christian music festival in the nation to have an mobile app and look forward to improving and building on it in the future," Whelchel said.

Others who played an instrumental role in the development were Robin Tressler, a senior from Asbury who helped import data and artist photos, Amy Ashida who assisted with graphic design, and Ichthus staff Tim Gerst, Tina Pugel, and Mark Vermilion.

This isn’t Whelchel’s first iPhone app; he developed the Highbridge Film Festival app for the April festival and has many more in development. His first app was "Boxen4Oxen" with friend, Jack Bandy. He also created "VisCenter" for the University of Kentucky's College of Engineering, "Film Budget" for Asbury’s Media Communications program with direction from Dr. Jim Owens, and "Chad Crouch for State Senate." All of these applications are available for download through iTunes.
