Student Work Wins Communicator Awards

WILMORE, Ky. — Asbury University students in the School of Communication Arts recently won five Communicator Awards in a competition judged by professionals in the International Academy of Visual Arts.

Two of Asbury's awards were Awards of Excellence, the organization's highest honor, "given to those entrants whose ability to communicate positions them as the best in the field." The other three awards were Awards of Distinction, "presented for projects that exceed industry standards in quality and achievement."

“It's an honor to receive this award as a student,” said Anna Leon ’13, who wrote an editorial titled “Minority Scholarships.” “It's also a great confirmation that achievement doesn't have to wait happen somewhere down the road. Our student status doesn't keep us from striving for and attaining excellence even at this early stage of life.”

The winning entries included work in a variety of student publications, such as the Collegian (Asbury’s student newspaper), the Squeeze (a magazine produced by a journalism class) and Vie (a special-edition magazine created by students).

"To be chosen for professional-level awards by judges who work for media outlets like Time Magazine and Wired Magazine further illustrates that the Asbury journalism program has a national — and even international — presence," said journalism professor David Wheeler. "Our journalism students have already been invited to speak at two national conferences this year, and after these awards, I expect even more invitations to pour in. Our students are extremely talented and hard-working, and Asbury University gives them the resources and guidance they need to make an impact on a worldwide audience."
