Equine Center Completes New Outdoor Riding Arena
WILMORE, Ky. — Asbury University has nearly doubled the amount of training space available to students in its nationally recognized Equine programs with the recent addition of an outdoor arena.
Patience was the key to completing the project as Asbury collected fill material from a construction project at Asbury Theological Seminary — an estimated $50,000 donation — over a two-year period. Once the site of the new arena was prepared, the University contributed an additional $15,000 for topsoil, grading, fencing, grass and 135 tons of sand.
The finished product is 71 feet by 171 feet, nearly the same size as the indoor arena just across the drive at the University’s Equine Center. In addition to students taking classes in horsemanship ministry, stable management, equine facilitated wellness and more, Asbury also provides “classes” to horses in its Police Mount training program. With so many feet going in different directions, the extra space will be put to good use.
“We hope the new arena will allow us to serve twice as many students and give them opportunities to take their classroom knowledge and immediately put it into action,” said Harold Rainwater, director of Asbury’s equine department.
