Songs of the Season, Nov. 29
WILMORE, KY—The Asbury College music and English departments present the annual interdisciplinary program, Songs of the Season, on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in Akers Auditorium on campus. The program is free and open to the public.
This collaborative effort blends seasonal music of Advent and Christmas with prose and poetry readings. Five members of the English faculty—Professors Shawnee Fleenor, Chuck Gobin, Marcia Hurlow, Daniel Strait and Paul Vincent—share literature from the 16th century to the present, including excerpts from James Joyce’s The Dubliners, Thomas Hardy’s Under the Greenwood Tree and a broad selection of poetry.
The musical participants include the Asbury College Women’s Choir with Prof. Virginia Bowles, Collegium Musicum Vocal Ensemble with Prof. Vicki Bell and three instrumental chamber groups of the Collegium Musicum—Brass Ensemble, String Ensemble and Guitar Ensemble—all under the direction of Dr. Ronald Holz. Collegium Vocal and String Ensembles perform Orlando Gibbons’ dramatic advent anthem, The Record of John. The Women’s Choir features Arlene Rector, harpist, in several of the accompaniments.
Audience members can join in singing several festive carols. The program is approximately one hour.
