Lending a Hand to Friends Like You, Too
WILMORE, Ky. — If you have a sense of humor and enjoy a good show, Asbury University could use your help during the filming of Friends Like You, Too, Asbury’s original sitcom series.
Students, faculty, staff and friends are invited to be a part of the live studio audience during filming for the sitcom, which will take place on Oct. 5-7, 2011, in the Miller Center for Communication Arts. Seating begins at 6:45 p.m., and taping begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 and are available from the Miller Center box office (hours below).
Filmed using the same techniques employed by television studios in Hollywood, Asbury’s sitcom features students from the Media Communication and Theatre and Cinema Performance Departments both in front of and behind the cameras. Students work in every aspect of the production from constructing the set to acting, operating the cameras, setting the lights and mixing the sound.
“We don’t use any canned laughter in the filming, so the studio audience really becomes a part of the production,” said Doug Smart, associate professor and producer of the sitcom. “The idea for the script came from a student, and it’s just a really funny show.”
Asbury is one of the few universities in the United States to offer a regular class in sitcom production, and the finished product has a reputation for excellence, earning a regional Emmy nomination for Smart for his work on last spring’s episode. Smart has 22 years of industry experience directing various primetime television shows such as “The Lawrence Welk Show” and “The Golden Girls” and currently directs productions for PBS.
Asbury’s box office is open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to midnight (box office closes at 9:30 p.m. Fridays). Saturday hours are 9 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The box office can be reached by calling (859) 858-3511, ext. 3207, or by emailing email@example.com.
