Included in the group of nominees was Asbury University professor Doug Smart for his direction of the sitcom “Friends Like You, Too.” The sitcom — which utilized Asbury student actors, crew and Communication Arts Department equipment exclusively — was performed before two live-studio audiences on the Asbury campus. The nomination was in the Director –Live or Live to Tape category. Smart, who has 22 years of industry experience directing various primetime NBC, CBS and ABC television shows, has already served as a faculty advisor to three Emmy-winning student productions.

“I’m honored to be nominated for the Emmy award, and thrilled that our TV sitcom ‘Friends Like You’ — which has a cast and crew comprised entirely of Asbury undergraduate students — is being recognized for its production values by the professional broadcasting community,” said Smart. “It’s especially rewarding when you realize that Asbury University is the only college or university in the nation I know of that offers a regular class in sitcom production.”

Asbury has won five student-production Emmy Awards in the past six years, but the “Friends Like You, Too” nomination is the first professional regional Emmy that is specifically for Asbury. This year’s student production Emmy Awards have not been announced yet.

“This is the first time that any of our faculty have been nominated for an Emmy while teaching at Asbury,” said Jim Owens, the dean of Asbury’s School of Communication Arts. “It is exciting to us to have six graduates and two faculty nominated for Emmy Awards. They have worked hard and we are proud of each of them.”

Other Asbury nominations for the 2011 awards were for Media Communication Assistant Professor Greg Bandy (a 1976 graduate of Asbury), and graduates Chrissy Pullinger ’07, Matthew Grimm ’02, Stephen Bailey ’99, Julie Martinez ’97 and Brandon Wickey ’99.

The Ohio Valley Chapter of the academy includes television production in Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio and West Virginia and the Emmy Awards banquet/ceremony will take place on July 30 in Louisville at the Seelbach Hotel.
