Business Students Present at Innovation Competition

WILMORE, Ky. — Four Asbury University undergraduate business students recently participated in the Alltech Innovation Competition, earning valuable experience in entrepreneurism along the way.

Teams from eight Kentucky institutions each pitched a business concept focused on innovation in Kentucky’s food and agriculture industries to a panel of judges to try to earn seed money to get their idea off the ground. The Asbury team’s idea was to found a livestock company called Mini Mooz that would specialize in Irish Dexter cattle — a breed which is especially suited to smaller farms because of its compact size, smaller feed requirements, high milk output and quality meat.

For team member Stuart Lunsford, the process of putting together the presentation, addressing judges’ questions and observing other teams provided useful context he hopes to use in creating his own business in the future.

“I learned how to better work on a team, meet deadlines together, and stand strong together even when we were nervous presenting in front of some intense judges,” Lunsford said. “The winning team was a superb MBA team, so watching their presentation really showed all of us how a solid business plan presentation should look in front of potential investors.”

The Asbury team was advised by two business department faculty members, Dr. Kevin Brown and Dr. Michael Kane, and comprised four seniors:

  • Isaac Archer, a business management major with an international emphasis and minor in accounting.
  • Rachel Halm, a double major in business management and equine management.
  • Stuart Lunsford, a business management major.
  • Caroline Veazey, a business management major with an international emphasis.
