Rev. Greg Haseloff - "You Are Sent"
“And when the Holy Spirit comes on you, you will be able to be my witnesses in Jerusalem, all over Judea and Samaria, even to the ends of the world.” Acts 1.8 (The Message)
These words are infused at the very core of the Body of Christ – at the center of its DNA and who it is to be in the world. The what, why, where, and how of being a follower of Jesus could each be answered in this verse of the Acts of the Apostles. These words of Jesus came after His clear declaration of the Great Commission – “Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them…” And these words which were spoken prophetically at His ascension came just 10 days before the Holy Spirit would fall at Pentecost and give birth to the church.
The two occurrences of you (pluaral) declare distinctly the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer and the life of the Church, AND then states what will happen because of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling – the mission for the believer and the Church. We cannot do the work of God without the life of God in us. Without the Spirit we cannot do anything that is of God.
The epic movement in history that takes place between the ascension of Jesus and the birth of the church unleashes the spiritual version of the principle of multiplication. Jesus, who was sent by God, is now unleashing “sent ones”. Dr. Robert Coleman says about the first apostles – ‘these witnesses of the resurrection prior to the ascension are now going to be workers in the harvest, who have the characteristics of the Shepherd.’ Our mission in apostolic succession is really very simple – we are the “sent ones!”
