Dr. Sandra Gray – “As I Onward Go”

October 22, 2012

"To this end I labor, struggling with all His energy, which so powerfully works in me.” – Col. 1:20

A week seldom passes that I have not heard the old cliché, “hang in there.”   The cares of this world, schedules, disappointments, and perceived delays in answered prayer, often lead to a spirit of giving up.  But Jesus Himself urges us onward.  He is our greatest champion, the one coming along side us, assuring that all He calls us to do can be accomplished through His strength.   This scripture in Colossians was one I discovered as a young Christian. Praying for a student early one morning before leaving for class, the Holy Spirit brought this powerful scripture to me to share. He was married, juggling the rigors of an education, work, and marriage and needed to know that he did not struggle alone, but had the energy of God working in him.  Both he and I rejoiced together that morning, triumphant in the truth of this scripture.  It has been a recurring theme for me over the years.  My energy supply seldom is adequate for the demands of the day, but I can lean on Almighty God, draw from His energy source, and finish the race to which He calls me.   Many begin the Christian journey full of zeal and expectation only to drift away, becoming cold and indifferent to Him.  What a joy when we meet those who are going on with God, growing in the wisdom and knowledge of Christ, becoming more distant from the world and increasingly Christ centered.  May it be so with all of us who follow Jesus – that we finish the race full of faith.

May I run the race before me, Strong and brave to face the foe,
Looking only unto Jesus, As I onward go.[i]
