Dr. Clair Budd – “Scripture’s Purpose”
“…so that everyone who belongs to God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” -- 2 Timothy 3:17 NRSV
Most Christians focus so much attention on the preceding verse (“All Scripture is inspired by God…”) that they may miss the purpose of Scripture identified in verse 17. They may explore the processes through which Scripture takes us (teaching, correction, reproof, training in righteousness), and not notice the destination to which those processes are intended to lead us.
That destination is completeness. The biblical word here points to “fulfilling the intended role or function.” God doesn’t just give us commands about how to live, but He also gives us His Word to help us become the kind of person He intends us to be, “equipped for every good work.”
This purpose is one reason Scripture is a cornerstone of spiritual vitality. But this purpose can only be fulfilled when we give ourselves to reading and studying the Scriptures. How are you allowing this purpose to be fulfilled in your life? In what ways have you seen your life become more complete and equipped through engagement with Scripture?
“Father God, in the midst of all the voices we might give ourselves to, may your voice embodied in the Scriptures become the most prominent so that we can become complete as you intend. Amen.”
