Rev. Stu Smith – “Holiness Unto the Lord”

February 13, 2014

"…and may the Lord cause you to increase and abound in love for one another, and for all people, just as we also do for you; so that He may establish your hearts without blame in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all His saints.” -- I Thessalonians 3:12&13

What is holiness all about?  What does it look like?  Is it possible in this life?

The reality is that holiness is loving God with all my heart, mind, soul and strength…and, loving my neighbor as myself.  To put it simply, holiness is Christlikeness.  Nothing more, nothing less.

As Keith Drury has said, “Holiness is not really an “it”…but, a “Him”…we need Him…we need the Lord Jesus in our lives…for in Him we find purity, power, and assurance”.  So, we find Jesus Himself is the best definition of holiness.  He truly loved His Heavenly Father and His neighbor perfectly.  That is the basis of what true holiness is:  mature Christlike love.

This mandate of holiness is all throughout God’s Word.  Scripture is crystal clear about the dual promise of forgiveness of sin and deliverance from the power of sin.  Of course, this cannot be done by human strength.  So, God promises a work in the heart.  This is a transformation of the heart and mind.  This is a change from the inside out that can enable a follower of Christ to actually love God with all of their being and all others as themselves.

Let’s never settle for a life lived beneath the provision of God.  That provision is for “Holiness Unto the Lord”.  May it be so in your life and mine.

CORNERSTONE:  Holiness
