Rev. Joy Ireland – “The Sign of a People on a Mission”

April 17, 2014

“Also I gave them my Sabbath as a sign between us, so they would know that I the Lord made them holy.” -- Ezekiel 20:12

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28

Have you ever seen long-standing married couples who have begun to resemble one another or the same phenomenon take place between a pet and its owner?  How does this happen?  Surely such pairs don’t plan this. Sometimes close relationships can become evident through physical appearance.  Those around us can tell with whom we belong.

This same concept is evident in the practice of our faith.  The way we look as we live our days becomes a reflection of the God we serve.  Scripture records that even the rhythm of a weekly Sabbath is a mirror reflecting the covenantal relationship between us and God.  God’s own description of the Sabbath is as “a sign between us.” So, rest testifies to covenant faithfulness.

Does your weekly rhythm resemble the God who gives rest?  Does the way you rest proudly proclaim the reality of your covenant relationship with God?  Faithful, obedient Sabbath observance is essential.  It not only demonstrates our covenant dependence upon the God of the universe, it also links us unashamedly to God’s mission in the world…the restoration of humanity to a loving Father.
