Prof. Michele Wells – “The Destination of a Doer”

September 05, 2013

"Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.  Anyone who listens to the Word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.” --  James 1:22-25

We all have those favorite scriptures that we have memorized. They are encouraging when we face challenging circumstances. The Word of God, however, is more than just a few favorite passages. The Word of God is the direction we need for our lives every day.  I have heard God’s Word referred to as a road map.  When I think of a road map it guides me where I want to go; it shows me the direction I am travelling, but it also has a vast amount of destinations.  Being a doer of the Word draws me close to God so that I hear His voice more clearly and follow the path that He has set. By being a doer I do not end up at a place that is not ordained by God. Following God’s Word leads me to life and not to sin.

Scripture is designed to place us in closer fellowship with Christ and with others.  Being a doer of the Word will not lead me to a path that is detrimental to me and dishonoring to Him. By being a doer, James 1:25 promises a blessing in what I do.
