Joe Bruner -- “I Think I Can…I Think I Can…”

November 27, 2013

“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.” – I Thessalonians 5:23-24

Most should remember the children’s story, The Little Engine that Could. This little red engine was carrying a load of great things for boys and girls to the other side of the mountain and broke down as it was trying to climb up the mountain. Several other big engines passed by the little red engine without helping. Then along came a little blue engine that was willing to help and hook up to the load.  He started up the steep mountain track and kept repeating “I think I can, I think I can.” Eventually the little engine made it to the top and delivered the cargo to the boys and girls on the other side of the mountain.

In thinking about holiness, what the word means, and all the different scriptures about holiness, it can be a bit daunting and seem like something unattainable. Similar to the little engine as it focused on the small portion of track in front of it, as we focus on the journey in front of us and keep “striving for the goal of the upward call” and keep whispering to ourselves “I think I can, I think I can,” we will eventually reach our destination to wholeness. The important thing is that we continue to strive and then let God do His part in the process.

“For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” -- Philippians 1:6
