Dr. Clair Budd – “Mystery Solved!”

September 11, 2013

“I became [the Church’s] servant according to God's commission that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, the mystery that has been hidden throughout the ages and generations but has now been revealed to His saints.” – Colossians 1:25-26 (NASB)

My wife and I often listen to mystery novels on CD when we travel by car for hours at a time; we enjoy the challenge of solving the mystery before the author reveals the final clue.  Scripture tells us that God’s plan was a mystery – a puzzle shrouded in a lack of knowledge.  It was hidden.

But this is all past tense since the time of the New Testament – and not because we (i.e. human beings) have figured it out.  Rather, it’s because God has chosen to reveal it to us, to uncover what was previously hidden.  And He has done this through Scripture, communicating His plan for Christ Jesus to live in us (v. 27) – what a wonder!  Without this revelation, no person could have anticipated or discerned this ending to the story!

We can learn so many things about God by observing what He has created (Romans 1:19-20). However, we could never learn or understand – without His direct revelation – that He desired to fix what sin had broken by placing His own Son in our hearts.  So Paul puts himself to the task of making this revelation fully known to others.  When we read and study the Scriptures, or teach them to others, we are continuing in this same great task of knowing and communicating the solution to the mystery.

Father God, thank You for not leaving me without a clue, but providing the Scriptures so that I might know Your plan for Your Son, Jesus, to live in me and in others.

CORNERSTONE:  Scripture
